Bishop

The Rt. Rev. Malayil Sabu Koshy Cherian was consecrated as the 13th Bishop of CSI Madhya Kerala Diocese on January 18, 2021, at the CSI Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kottayam, Kerala. He was ordained as a deacon in 1988 and as a presbyter in 1989. Bishop Cherian started his ministry as a missionary with the erstwhile Andhra Mission (now known as the Telangana Mission). From 1988 to 1996, he was actively involved in educational initiatives and establishing new churches in the Mogullapally and Chittiyala mandals of Warangal district.

Following his missionary work, he served as Vicar in several churches, including St. Andrews CSI Church Kumplampoika, CSI Jubilee Memorial Church in New York, CSI Ascension Church Kottayam, St. Paul’s CSI Church Mooledom, CSI Christ Church Mavelikara, St. Mary’s CSI Church Kuzhikala, and St. Thomas CSI Church, Tholassery.

In 2014, Bishop Cherian was elected as the Treasurer of the Diocese of Madhya Kerala. During his three-year tenure, he introduced a centralized salary system for all clergy and evangelists. He was also responsible for overseeing the management and protection of Diocesan properties. His tenure included managing the diocese’s bicentenary celebrations and the 35th session of the CSI Synod during the demonetization period in India.

Bishop Cherian is known for his ecumenical focus and maintaining interfaith relations. He was the Member, Kerala Council of Churches, founding President, Ecumenical Fellowship in Kumplampoika, Vice President, Bible Society Kerala Auxiliary, Vice President, Ecumenical Fellowship Kottayam, President, Union Christian Fellowship in Mavelikara, Member, Nilackal Ecumenical Trust, Nilackal and President, Ecumenical Fellowship in Mooledom. 

Bishop Cherian’s commitment to environmental issues is evident in his focus on agriculture and sustainability. He has worked to transform the land around the Bishop's house into environmentally friendly spaces. His environmental advocacy has also led him to participate in discussions at various UN forums, where he has represented his views on sustainable practices.

Dr. Mrs. Jessy Sara Koshy Kochamma, has actively participated in mission work alongside Bishop Cherian during his ministry, contributing as a missionary doctor. Throughout the Bishop's pastoral journey, she has been prominently involved in various initiatives. Jessy Kochamma has led the Women's Fellowship of the CSI Madhya Kerala Diocese since assuming its presidency. Her leadership has focused on women's empowerment and providing medical support, with particular emphasis during the pandemic period has been praiseworthy.
